STORY BEHIND BHAI DOOJ

Bhaiya  Dooj  or bhai dooj is a Hindu festival which is a celebration of love and unity between brother and sister. It is celebrated two days after Diwali.On the occasion of Bhai Dooj, sisters women pray  for longitivity and prosperity in lives for their brothers.

On this day of Bhai Dooj, sisters invite their brothers to her home and apply  ’tilak’ on their forehead and offer prayers to the Gods Brother in return  present their sisters  gifts  as a token of love.This festival is very popular and is widely celebrated in major part of our country including Northern India ,and other states like Bihar,Bengal and even in country Nepal

There is a sweet mythological story of brother and sister  why this festival is celebrated.According to one belief, Yamraj, who is known as the God of Death, once visited his siter Yami/Yamuna on this day. Sister Yami welcomed him with an aarti, applied ’tilak’ on his forehead and offered him with lots of sweets. Seeing her divine love, Yamraj presented her with a gift. Yamraj also said that any brother who would receive an tilak from his sister on this day should never be afraid of death.Another popular  story for this festival is that Subhadra, Lord Krishna’s sister applied  tilak ,did Aarti and offered sweets and flowers  to him and after which  he killed the demon king Narakasur.

There are several stories and beliefs which are associated with this day.Depending upon origin and stories of the region ,people celebrate this festival of love .

Some give it different name,some celebrate it as per their religion,but one thing is common ,which is the true and divine love which all brother and sister shower on each other and wish for good luck and lots of happiness for them.
